Description

Nos 1 and 2 West Town Cottages are two cottages, originally a single house, dating to the 17th century or earlier. The exterior is rendered, likely cob on stone rubble footings, with a corrugated iron roof, gabled at each end. Notable features include a left-end stack with a brick shaft and a large, projecting front lateral stack with set-offs, a brick shaft, and a bread oven. The original plan likely consisted of a single-depth range, two rooms wide. A flat-roofed, single-storey addition to the rear left was added in the 20th century. The asymmetrical front of No 1 features a front door to the right, a 20th-century sash window on the ground floor, and a small-pane casement window on the first floor. No 2, known as Cheney Cottage, has a front door to the right and one ground floor and one first floor casement window. The interior was not inspected during a survey in 1987, so the dating remains provisional and an inspection may be needed to confirm it. The buildings have group value with the nearby Old Gatehouse.
