Description

Lendrick is an early 19th-century villa, likely remodelling an earlier building, with later 19th and 20th-century alterations. The construction combines stone and cob, with whitewashed and stuccoed surfaces, covered by a 2-span slate roof, hipped at the ends, featuring deep eaves to the main block and a single-span slate roof for the right-hand block. Two brick stacks with rendered shafts are present, one at each end of the building. The original plan included a double-depth main block, with a central garden entrance leading to a passage and a stair hall positioned behind it, and a rear street entrance accessible from the stair hall. A late 19th-century single-room plan addition was built to the left, creating a lobby or garden room, topped by a flat-roofed terrace. A single-depth block, set back from the front facade on the right, may have originated as a stable block, forming a small courtyard with adjacent service rooms and a conservatory at the right end of the main house. The main block was extended at the rear in the late 19th century, adding service rooms, including a rear right kitchen and a narrow passage behind the rear left parlour. A 1808 lease details the original "2 dwelling houses" on the site, leased by John Comyns of Wood to Thomas Boone, a builder, with stipulations regarding future building work. The front elevation of the main block presents a 1:3 bay design, with a flat-roofed addition on the left, which has 19th-century iron railings to the roof. There are three 2-leaf, 2-pane French windows behind a verandah supported by posts; the right-hand end of the verandah has been filled in. The French windows are flanked by 2-light transomed windows. The first floor features three late 19th-century 4-pane sashes, with shutters on the right-hand windows, and a late 19th-century tripartite sash on the ground floor left. A late 19th-century conservatory adjoins the right end of the house. The right-hand single-depth block has late 19th or 20th-century sashes and casements, alongside a 20th-century attic dormer. The rear elevation, facing the road, has a 19th-century panelled door with a reeded doorcase, accompanied by 19th and 20th-century windows, including six late 19th-century first-floor sashes. The interior retains original early 19th-century joinery, including shutters, panelled doors (featuring a Gothick arched door and doorframe between the passage and stair hall), a stick baluster staircase with a ramped handrail, early 19th-century reeded cornices to the principal rooms, and a complete set of high-quality late 19th-century marble fireplaces with intact ironwork and tiling. A partial wall removal between the two left-hand rooms has relocated a chimney-piece to the rear wall. The left-hand lobby contains unusual late 19th-century shutters concealed behind dado panelling beneath the window sills. Lendrick is an evolved villa, representative of similar properties along Fore Street.
