Description
First and Second World War Memorial.
MATERIAL: granite.
DESCRIPTION: the memorial has a flat base surmounted by a tapering plinth, and a Celtic–style wheel cross. The plinth contains recessed panels. The front panel included lettering which reads-‘TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND THE IMMORTAL/ MEMORY OF THE BRAVE MEN OF/ BISHOPSTEIGNTON/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919/ GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS/ THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS’. The two side panels include the names of those who died, ordered by the date of their passing. In a well space in front of the base is a stone plaque that commemorates those who died during the Second World War, with lettering that reads-‘ALSO TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE/ WHO FELL IN THE SECOND WOLD WAR 1938-45’, with the names of the fallen set out below.
