Description
The Sopworth War Memorial is a structure built around 1920 to honor the men from Sopworth who died while serving in the First World War and the Second World War.
Standing approximately 2 meters high, the memorial is made of granite and features a Celtic style wheel cross on a rough hewn, tapering shaft and plinth.
On the front of the plinth, there is an inscription in black lettering that reads: "IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY - OF," followed by the names of two soldiers, including their regiment, and the phrase "OF THIS PARISH - WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918. - YE THAT LIVE ON MID ENGLISH PASTURES GREEN - REMEMBER US AND THINK WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN."
The rear of the memorial also has an inscription in black lettering stating "ROLL OF HONOUR - WORLD WAR II 1939 -1945 - IN PROUD AND LOVING MEMORY OF," followed by the names of six soldiers, including their regiment.
