Description

No. 38 on Fore Street is a house that was formerly a public house, likely built around the early 19th century, possibly at the same time as No. 40. The building is colourwashed and plastered, likely made from stone rubble, and has a slate roof with gabled ends and a stack at the right end.

The exterior features a symmetrical three-bay front with a canted bay window on the first floor at the center. The central entrance has a 19th-century panelled door, with reeded panelling at the bottom and a rectangular glazed fanlight that dates back to its time as a pub, displaying the name "H.A. Starkey, Licensed Retailer of Wines, Spirits, Beer, Cider and Tobacco to be Consumed on the Premises." To the left of the entrance is a 16-pane sash window, while the right side has an 8-pane sash window, both topped with square-headed hood moulds that have label stops. The first floor's canted bay contains an 8-pane sash window in the center and 4-pane sash windows on the outer sides. The first floor windows on the left and right are also 8-pane sashes, each with square-headed hood moulds and label stops.

The interior has not been inspected. This building was first known as the 'Union' and later as the 'Manor.' It is a charming early 19th-century structure, with the canted bay being a notable feature in the street.
