Description
The Bulphan War Memorial is a structure dedicated to the memory of those who served in the First and Second World Wars, made from polished grey granite. It features a trefoil cross atop a tapering octagonal shaft, which is set on an octagonal plinth that stands on a two-stepped octagonal base. The names of young men who lost their lives in the First World War are inscribed on six sides of the plinth, along with details such as their ages, regiments, dates and places of death, and whether they were killed in action or died of wounds. One face of the plinth bears the inscription, "To the Glory of God and in gratitude to our sons and brothers who laid down their lives for king and country in the Great War 1914-1918." The memorial also lists three names of those who died in the Second World War, while the eighth side of the plinth carries the inscription, "Also for those who gave their lives in the war (dates illegible)." It is located among the gravestones and memorials in the churchyard of St Mary the Virgin, which is a Grade I listed building.
