Description

The Church of St Mary is a Grade I listed building located on Church Road in Bulphan. It dates from the late 15th century and has undergone extensive rebuilding in the 19th century. The structure is made of limestone and flint rubble, with 19th-century brick and timber framing.

The nave, which is largely rebuilt, features two late 15th-century windows set into the north wall, each with two cinquefoiled lights in square heads. The south doorway, also from the 15th century, has hollow chamfered jambs, a four-centred head, and a moulded label. The chancel includes a 19th-century east window and a 15th-century window in the north wall, which has two trefoiled lights in a square head, with a similar window in the south wall.

The belfry is incorporated within 19th-century timber-framed and plastered walls, while the original main structure remains intact, featuring arched shores, arch braces, and saltire bracing. The church is three bays high and was formerly topped by a spire. The south porch, dating from the 15th century, has an entrance with moulded jambs and a four-centred head, along with carved spandrels. The porch also features a moulded tie beam and cusped bargeboards, with side windows that have four-centred heads, traceried spandrels, and moulded mullions. The roof is supported by a king post and has a moulded ridge beam with curved braces.
