Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade II* listed building located in Salcott. It dates from the 14th century and has undergone extensive rebuilding following earthquake damage in 1884, with significant work completed in 1893. The original structure was built from flint rubble and septaria, featuring limestone dressings. The nave is from the 14th century, while the north wall was added in the late 19th century.
The south wall includes three windows: one from the 19th century, one from the 14th century with two pointed lights and a plain spandrel in a two-centred head with a moulded label, and a western window that is partly from the 15th century. The late 15th century south doorway retains its original door and features moulded jambs, a four-centred arch within a square head, and decorated spandrels. The chancel was rebuilt in the late 19th century.
A late 15th or early 16th century south porch showcases a four-centred arch with two moulded orders, supported by attached shafts with moulded bases and capitals. The side walls of the porch have partly original windows with two cinquefoiled lights in a square head. The late 15th century west tower is built in three stages and has an embattled parapet. It features a two-centred tower arch with one moulded and one hollow chamfered order, and the side walls also have partly original windows with two cinquefoiled lights in a square head. The west window was added in the late 19th century, and the west doorway has a two-centred arch with moulded jambs and a label. The nave roof, constructed in the late 19th century, consists of seven cants with intermittent tie beams and arch bracing to the principal rafters.
