Description
The Church of St Nicholas is a Grade I listed building located on Cley Road in Blakeney. It dates from the 15th century, with a 13th-century chancel. This large church is constructed of flint, with stone dressings made from Lincolnshire Limestone and Bath Stone, and features lead-clad roofs. The exterior was refaced with knapped flint in the 1880s.
The church includes a 15th-century nave with a clerestory, as well as north and south aisles, all adorned with Perpendicular traceried windows. A prominent 15th-century west tower features diagonal buttresses, an embattled parapet with pinnacles, a three-light Perpendicular traceried belfry, a large four-light Perpendicular west window, and an octagonal stair turret on the south side. There is also a north porch added in 1896. The 13th-century chancel has rendered walls and showcases a seven-light stepped east window along with Perpendicular windows on the north and south sides.
The tower is attached to the north-east corner of the chancel and has pinnacles, cusped bell-openings, and diagonal buttresses. It is believed to have originally served as a stair turret for a chamber above the chancel and was later extended as an architectural feature, eventually being used as a beacon.
Inside, the church features six-bay arcades and a 15th-century hammerbeam roof in the nave, along with a tall tower arch. The chancel has a two-bay vaulted design from the 13th century. The base of the screen is from the 15th century, while the remainder was added around 1913. The stalls with misericords were restored in 1913, and some 15th-century bench ends with poppy-heads can also be found. Additionally, there is a fine Perpendicular octagonal font.
