Description

This late 19th-century lychgate provides access to St Michael's Church. Built of rusticated grey limestone rubble with red sandstone dressings, it features a slate roof and timber gable ends. The Gothic Revival design incorporates grey limestone walls supporting an arched brace roof, which extends beyond the walls on timber struts featuring trefoils. The roof has crested ridge tiles, small gablets, and timber Perpendicular traceried gable ends where the cusping below the tracery has been replaced with straight timber. A pair of cast and wrought iron gates are topped with fleur de lis finials, and include a middle rail decorated with quartrefoils, cusped panels below the top rail, and further fleur de lis and scrolled wrought iron finials. Smaller pedestrian gates, with simpler twisted wrought iron finials, are positioned to the left and right of the main gate, all hung from castellated gate piers. The lychgate’s design is notable for its impressive appearance and quality ironwork.
