Description

This is a house dating from the mid to late 17th century, with 20th-century additions. The walls are whitewashed cob, and the roof is covered with asbestos slates, gabled at the ends, with a projecting stack on the left-hand side. The house is positioned with its gable end facing the street, which is unusual compared to the other buildings on Sandpath Road. Originally it comprised two rooms, a larger heated room and a smaller unheated room adjoining it to the right. The staircase is located within the smaller room, and the original entrance position is unclear, but it may have been directly into this room on the rear elevation. A single-room addition was built on the right-hand end in the late 20th century, and a lean-to has been added to the rear right corner, which incorporates and remodels an earlier structure. The front (east-facing) elevation has a 20th-century door leading directly into the heated room and two small first-floor windows; the left-hand window has a rounded head. The rear (west-facing) elevation has two windows with 20th-century casements, and a doorway to the left with a timber lintel. Inside, the heated room features a cross beam with scroll stops, exposed joists, and an open fireplace with a scroll-stopped lintel. The unheated room has a roughly chamfered axial beam and exposed joists. Pegged straight principals are visible on the first floor. A first-floor iron fireplace from the early 19th century is present, complete with its grate and timber chimneypiece. The building contributes to the group value of the church and other listed vernacular buildings along Sandpath Road.
