Kindle Cottage

Kindle Cottage is a cottage dating from the early 18th century, with a late 20th century addition. It is constructed of colourwashed cob and stone, topped with an asbestos slate roof that has gabled ends. The cottage features a projecting right end stack and a projecting stack with set-offs at the left end, which was formerly part of an adjacent building that has since been demolished.

The cottage is a single cell, approximately square in plan, originally designed with a heated room. There is a front door located in the right end wall next to the stack, and a stair in the opposite corner. A partition has been added parallel to the rear wall, creating a small service room, and a single-storey bathroom has been added to the right end, accessible from the service room.

The cottage has two storeys and presents one window on the front elevation facing Greenhill Lane, which includes a 12-pane sash window on the first floor and a two-light ground floor casement window with six panes per light. The right end features a 19th-century panelled front door to the left and a two-light first floor casement window with two panes per light.

Documents held by the owner include a lease from 1741 and several records of ownership changes. Kindle Cottage is a rare example of a relatively unaltered single-cell cottage and is part of a group with Berry Farmhouse and Nos 2, 4, and 6 Vicarage Hill.
