Description
Langmead Cottage and Cob Cottage are a pair of cottages, originally built as a single dwelling, dating from around the early 16th century. Number 9 has been altered in the 20th century with new windows. The cottages are constructed of whitewashed cob with a thatched roof, gabled at the ends. They have axial stacks made of local grey limestone with a brick shaft on the left end, and a further stack at the left end.
The original plan was that of a late medieval open hall house, with evidence of original flooring. The front facade is asymmetrical, with three windows. The eaves of the thatched roof are pronounced over the first-floor windows. Number 9 has a chamfered door frame to its front door, which may lead into a passage, and 20th-century casement windows. Number 11 has a 20th-century porch and two first-floor windows, along with one ground-floor window, each a two-light casement with six panes.
The interior was not inspected during the survey but is known to retain an internal jetty and a medieval roof with blackened thatch. Information regarding the cottages was provided by L Keefe, Teignbridge Conservation Officer.
