Description

This is a cottage, possibly dating back to the 17th century, although it has been significantly remodelled with internal alterations in the late 20th century. The exterior is whitewashed and rendered, with a thatched roof that is gabled at the left end. The cottage has a stack on the left end and another on the rear. Evidence within the adjoining property at No. 2 suggests that No. 4 was originally the hall and inner room of a three-room and passage house from the 17th century, with No. 2 serving as the lower end. It is difficult to determine how much of the original 17th-century fabric remains, although the external walls are straight and the stack placement is noteworthy. The cottage has two storeys and a three-window front with regular window placement. The eaves of the thatched roof create an eyebrow effect over three first-floor windows, each with two lights and 20th-century leaded panes. A 20th-century front door is located at the extreme right, and a canted bay window is on the left side of the door. A ground-floor window on the left is similar in design to the first-floor windows. The interior has not been inspected. The cottage has group value with Gildons Cottage and Brookside.
