Description
Thorpe Cottage is a small cottage with origins likely dating back to the 17th century. It is constructed of colourwashed rendered cob and has a corrugated iron roof, which was formerly thatched. The cottage features an axial stack at the left end and has a single-storey addition at the front left. It may have originally been part of the hall of a larger 17th-century house that was divided into a row of four cottages in the 18th century, or it could have been one of a row of small 17th-century cottages. The layout is single depth, one room wide, with a kitchen located in the single-storey front addition. The building has both two-storey and single-storey elements. The front is asymmetrical with two windows, accessed through the single-storey addition on the left. There are two 2-light 20th-century casements under timber lintels, with a similar casement on the first floor. Inside, there is an open fireplace that is partly blocked. At the time of the survey in 1985, there was no access to the roof space, but the roof trusses may be of interest. Thorpe Cottage is one of a row of four cottages facing the main road through Clawton.
