Description
Elm Cottage is a small cottage with origins likely dating back to the 17th century. It features whitewashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings and has a corrugated iron roof over thatch, gabled at the right end. The right gable end has a projecting stack with a bread oven. The cottage may have originally served as the kitchen end of a larger 17th-century house, which was later divided into a row of four cottages, probably in the 18th century. Alternatively, it could have been one of a row of four single-cell cottages from the 17th century.
The cottage consists of one room with a service room in a rear lean-to and is two storeys high. The front has an asymmetrical layout with one window and a front door to the left, along with two 19th-century three-light casement windows, each with six panes per light. All windows are fitted with external shutters. Inside, there is an open fireplace in the hall with a cloam oven. The roof space has not been inspected but may hold interest. Elm Cottage is part of a row of four cottages facing the main road through Clawton and has seen little alteration since the 19th century.
