Description

Mazoe is a small cottage with probable origins in the 17th century. It features colourwashed rendered cob and a corrugated iron roof, which was formerly thatched. The cottage has a gabled left end and a stack on the left gable. It may have originally been part of a larger 17th-century house that was divided into a row of four cottages, likely in the 18th century, or it could have been one of four small cottages built in the 17th century.

The cottage has a single depth plan, is one and a half rooms wide, and has direct entry into a large heated room on the left. The half room on the right is a small unheated service room. It is two storeys tall and has a roughly symmetrical two-window front with a central door beneath a timber lintel. The ground floor window on the right is a 20th-century pivot-hung casement under a timber lintel, while the other windows are 20th-century two-light casements with glazing bars, with the left ground floor window also under a timber lintel.

The interior plan remains intact, with the stair located against the rear wall. At the time of the survey in 1985, there was no access to the roof space, but the roof trusses may be of interest. Mazoe is one of four cottages facing the main road through Clawton and is paired in plan with the adjoining cottage, Tudor Rose, representing an unusual survival of a very small two-room cottage.
