Description

Nos 1 and 2 Church Road are a pair of cottages, likely built in the mid-17th century. They are constructed from whitewashed cob on stone rubble footings and feature a corrugated iron roof, which was formerly thatched. The cottages have gabled ends and stone end stacks. Each cottage has a single depth plan, being one and a half rooms wide, with a heated hall/kitchen at the outer end and a half room that includes an unheated service room and a stair in the center. In the left-hand cottage, the service room is at the front and the stair is at the rear, while the arrangement is reversed in the right-hand cottage. The front doors on either side of the central half rooms lead directly into the heated rooms. A small lean-to is attached to the right side of the building.

The cottages are two stories high and have a symmetrical three-window front. The front doors are located under corrugated iron porch canopies supported by timber brackets, flanking a single-light window. The ground floor windows on the left and right are two-light casements with six panes per light. The central first-floor window has four panes, while the first-floor windows on either side are two-light casements with glazing bars, which were probably originally identical. A notable feature is a three-light ovolo-moulded timber window from the 17th century on the left side of the building, which appears to be original.

The interior of the right-hand cottage remains largely unaltered since the 19th century and includes an open fireplace. This pair of cottages is a rare example of ingeniously planned 17th-century architecture, situated prominently at a corner site. A similar pair of cottages can be found in Manaton parish.
