Description

East Down Farmhouse is a farmhouse that has its origins in the 17th century or earlier, with alterations made in the 19th century and renovations in the 20th century. The building is colourwashed and rendered, likely constructed from cob on stone rubble footings, with some brick. It features a slate roof that is hipped at the left end of the main range and gabled at the right end, while the front left wing is also gabled at the end. The farmhouse has an axial stack, an end stack to the main range, and a slightly projecting gable end brick stack to the front wing.

The original layout of the farmhouse was likely two rooms with a through passage, and the hall stack backs onto this passage. The front left wing, which is adjacent to the hall, is probably of 17th-century origin but may have been added later as a kitchen and has been partly rebuilt in brick. There is evidence of disturbance to the right return wall of the inner room, suggesting it has either been rebuilt or possibly extended.

The farmhouse has two storeys and an asymmetrical two-window front on the main range, with the front wing to the left and a 20th-century porch in the left-hand angle between the wing and the main range. The front door leads into the through passage and has a wide open-fronted porch with a sloping slate roof supported by stone cheeks. The rear door to the through passage is blocked under a timber lintel. The windows are 20th-century two-light casements with glazing bars, and the first-floor windows are set under raking roofs that rise slightly above the eaves line.

Inside, there is an open fireplace in the hall with stone jambs and a plain timber lintel, along with a chamfered ceiling beam. The wing contains a chamfered cross beam and exposed joists. The roof space has not been inspected but may hold further interest.
