Description
The lych-gate at the Church of St Michael is a small gabled structure built in 1714. It is constructed of roughcast rubblestone and features a grouted graded slate roof with slate-coped verges. The gate has massive projecting stone lintels above rough square-headed arches, with 19th-century iron gates on the outer arch and a bracket for a lantern above the inner arch.
There is a slightly recessed and heavily worn inscription stone beneath its own projecting lintel above the outer arch, which reads: "BUILT: 1714/ A: LEGAC(Y): W(AS)/ BEQUEATHED: BY YE: REVd: RICE/ MOR: A(M): TOW/ ARDS: THIS: GA(TE)/ WAS: LAID: OUT/ BY: RWR: OI: TH: W ( )."
Inside, the roof of the lych-gate features a central A-frame truss that rises from the walls, with a pegged collar and yoke supporting the ridge piece. It has single purlins and rafters, all showing extensive traces of limewash and limetorching between them.
