Description

Cayzers is a house that dates from the 17th century or earlier, located in Haccombe-with-Combe, Combeinteignhead. It is constructed of whitewashed rendered cob and stone rubble, topped with a thatched roof that is hipped at the right end and half-hipped at the left end. The house features a left end stack and a large projecting lateral stack on the front with a tall rendered shaft.

The plan of the interior was not accessible during the survey in 1987, so details are uncertain. However, it appears to be a single-depth main block that is two rooms wide, with a rear right outshut that has a catslide roof, which may be integral or a later addition. There is a 20th-century addition at the right end.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical two-window front. The thatch eaves are eyebrowed over the two first-floor windows. A 20th-century lean-to porch is located on the front to the left of centre, with an inner door to the left of the lateral stack. The windows are 20th-century casements with glazing bars. The left side of the house, facing the road, has two casement windows.

While the interior was not inspected, it is reported to have exposed ceiling beams, and an interior inspection might lead to a revision of the suggested dating. Cayzers is an attractive small traditional house that is part of a good group on a corner site. A postcard from around 1900 shows the house before the addition of the front lean-to and before the left-hand first-floor window was inserted.
