Description
Broadway Farm is a farmhouse dating from the 16th or 17th century, constructed of rendered stone or cob with a slated roof that has gables at each end. It features large rendered stacks on the left-hand gable and an off-centre ridge stack to the right, likely serving the original hall. The building has a three-room and through-passage plan, two storeys high, and is three windows wide.
The doorway is off-centre to the left, positioned between the two left-hand ground-storey windows, and is framed by a late 19th-century gable porch. The two left-hand windows on the ground floor are 19th-century three-light wood casements, each with four panes, while a 20th-century metal-framed window is located to the right. The second-storey windows consist of 19th-century three-part wood casements, each with three panes and transom lights above, with the right-hand window featuring a segmental head.
Although the interior was not inspected, the owner has indicated that the hall and kitchen originally had large open fireplaces, which are now blocked up, and that the head-beam of the screen between the hall and passage remains. This arrangement of having a stack at the upper end of the hall is extremely rare in Devon.
