Description

Metley is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th century or 17th century, likely incorporating the walls of a medieval house. It is constructed of rendered stone or cob and features a tiled roof that is gabled at each end. The building is two storeys high with single-storey lean-tos at the rear, which are probably later additions. The main range has an original plan consisting of three rooms and a through-passage, which includes a kitchen, hall, and parlour on the ground floor. There are stacks at each gable and at the rear wall of the hall, and a stair turret is located behind the kitchen.

The front of the house has four windows and a doorway positioned to the left of centre, with the front wall rebuilt from this point to the left. The two ground-storey windows to the right of the doorway and the right-hand second-storey window feature wooden ovolo-moulded mullions, with the window next to the doorway having four lights and the others having three lights. The remaining windows are 19th-century wooden casements. The right-hand gable has a stack with a tapered head and also includes a wood ovolo-moulded mullioned window of two lights on each storey. The smaller ground-storey window, set in an earlier opening, has vertical ferrumenta in the centre of each light and leaded diamond-shaped glazing.

The left-hand gable features a projecting chimney-breast with a rectangular oven adjacent to it. All three ground-storey rooms have chamfered ceiling beams, with those in the parlour carved with raised floral and other motifs. The roof was rebuilt in the 20th century, but a piece of a medieval arch-braced collar-beam survives in the hall, having been reused. It is likely that fireplaces and other internal features are concealed under plaster.
