Description
Chipley Mill is an outbuilding that was formerly a mill, likely built in the 19th century. It is constructed of stone rubble, with quoins and window dressings made from squared Devonian limestone on the east gable. The roof is covered with asbestos slate. The building has two storeys. The east gable features a large cart entrance with red brick jambs on the right and a small window on the left. There are three windows with 2-light casements on the second storey and a single window in the apex of the gable. The south front has a doorway with a plank door at the right-hand end, which is well above ground level. On the second storey, there are eight windows with 2-light wood casements. The interior has not been inspected. The mill and the associated house form a notable group, both appearing on the 1841 tithe map. The mill was described in the schedule as a bone mill owned by John Milward and occupied by William Law, who also lived in the house. By the 1905 25-inch Ordnance Survey Map, the mill was noted as disused. Neither the mill nor the house is depicted on the 2-inch Ordnance Map from 1803-4.
