Description
Poole Farmhouse is a late medieval farmhouse with 19th-century additions at the rear. It is constructed of stone and cob, rendered and painted at the front. The side walls were rebuilt in the 19th or 20th century in stone, with brick dressings on the right-hand side. The roof is slated, with a hip at the right-hand end. The original plan consisted of three rooms on the ground floor, likely with an unheated inner room, a hall, and a kitchen by the 17th century. The front has four window bays, all with 19th-century wood casements. These have two lights with eight panes per light, except for a later ground-floor window to the right, which has six panes per light. The off-centre doorway has a six-panel door, with four lower flush panels and two glazed upper panels. A porch with a solid wall and slated pent roof is to the right of the doorway. To the left of the doorway, a projecting lateral chimney stack, rendered and with a tapered top, originally served the hall. A small rectangular projection at the base of the stack, to the right, is likely an oven. Inside, the hall has an internal jetty at the lower end, which was formerly projected into an open hall. The jetty is now plastered in, but the owner has observed joists beneath. A heavily moulded main ceiling beam, likely from the early 16th century, is present but may have been moved from elsewhere. The passage now has a window at the rear, but the owner has found remnants of a doorway in the wall. The kitchen has been considerably altered, although the owner reports that a large fireplace and oven remain in the rear wall, now plastered in. The roof was rebuilt in the late 19th or early 20th century.
