Description

Binkwell Cottages are a pair of cottages located next to the Church House Inn in Torbryan, possibly originally built as one house. They date from the 17th century or earlier and feature a lean-to addition on the east side, along with 20th-century extensions at the rear of both cottages. The cottages are constructed from rendered stone or cob, with the front wall of No. 2 (on the right) noticeably thicker than that of No. 1. They have a wheat-reed thatched roof that is hipped at the left end, where there is a stone chimney stack with a tapered top. There is also a rendered stack, likely made of brick, on the ridge between the two cottages.

Both cottages are two-storeys tall, with single-storey additions. Each cottage has a doorway on the right side, featuring a plank door and a wooden canopy with a pent roof (slated at No. 1). No. 2 has one window to the left on the ground floor, while No. 1 has two windows and an additional window in the lean-to. Each cottage has one irregularly placed window on the second storey. All windows are fitted with 19th-century or early 20th-century wooden casements.

Inside, No. 1 has good plain 19th-century details, while No. 2 features a ground floor with a floor beam that is chamfered on both sides and nearly touches the west gable wall, supported by heavy plain joists. Both cottages have fireplaces in the east wall and additional fireplaces in the west wall on both floors, each with chamfered wood lintels. The roof spaces are not accessible.
