Description

Tapleys is a house dating from the late 16th century or 17th century, with later additions. It is constructed of rendered stone or cob and has a slated roof that is hipped at the right-hand end. The building has two storeys and features single-storey lean-tos at the rear. The main range has a three-room ground plan, with the right-hand room currently used for storage and accessed separately, separated by a stone wall, which may indicate a later addition.

The front of the house has an off-centre doorway to the left, which is sheltered by an early 20th-century glazed porch. There is one window on either side of the porch on the ground storey, while the second storey has one window above the porch and another to the far right. Most windows are 19th or early 20th-century wood casements, except for a tall, small-paned horizontal sliding sash window from the late 18th or early 19th century located above the porch. A projecting stone chimney stack with a tapered top is situated at the rear of the two left-hand rooms.

Inside, there is a large fireplace in the rear wall of the middle ground-storey room, featuring a floor made of slates on edge and a segmental brick arch made of headers. The second storey contains two plank doors with long strap hinges. The roof over the two left-hand rooms has two trusses with principal rafters that have plain feet, threaded purlins, and a ridge-piece. Both trusses originally had halved collar beams with shaped ends, but only one, which is cambered, remains. Other interesting features may be concealed beneath the plaster.
