Description
New Road House and Corner House is a house, possibly two dwellings, likely built in the 1840s. It features a colourwashed and stuccoed exterior with a slate roof that is gabled at both ends and gabled to the front in the centre, with end stacks. The building has a plan that is two rooms wide, probably single depth, and includes a single-storey rear centre service wing with a central entrance.
The exterior is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-bay front, with the centre bay breaking forward and topped with a gable that has deep verges. The central 20th-century timber front door is accompanied by a rectangular fanlight and an attractive doorcase with moulded brackets supporting a cornice. The original windows include 16-pane sashes on the ground floor and 12-pane sashes on the first floor, along with a small round-headed window in the centre gable and round-headed first-floor windows on the returns.
The interior has not been inspected but may still have original joinery. This house is an unspoilt example of 19th-century architecture located in the centre of Starcross.
