Description

This building is a barn located about 40 metres southeast of Place Barton. It is likely from the 16th century or earlier and was re-roofed in the 20th century. The barn is constructed of stone rubble and features a corrugated iron roof, with gabled ends and a slate roof over the horse engine house.

The barn is massive and rectangular, forming one side of the farmyard to the southeast of Place Barton. It has a grand porch on the west side and an opposing doorway on the east, suggesting it was used for threshing and storage. Its size is comparable to a late medieval tithe barn. An oval horse engine house was added to the west side, likely in the 19th century, along with a lean-to, which is probably a 20th-century addition.

The barn is single-storey and symmetrical, with a large gabled porch at the centre of the west side, the horse engine house to the left, and the lean-to to the right. The west side is buttressed, and the ends also feature buttresses, ventilation slits, and putlog holes.

Inside, there is no evidence of a former loft. The original roof structure was some form of cruck construction, with the feet of the crucks extending to about 1 metre above ground. This barn is a rare example of a large early barn in Devon and has group value with Place Barton and other listed buildings in the farmyard.
