Description

Ridgeway is a cottage dating from around the mid-18th century, with some modifications made in the late 20th century. It features whitewashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings and has a thatched roof that is hipped at the ends, with end stacks. The plan consists of a single depth, two rooms wide, with the right-hand room being slightly smaller. There is an approximately central entrance leading into a stair hall, with a narrow rear service room or axial passage behind the stair. A late 20th-century lean-to has been added at the right end.

The cottage is two storeys high and has an almost symmetrical two-window front. The thatch eaves are eyebrowed over the first-floor windows, and there are steps leading up to a plank front door with a late 20th-century pentice. The windows are 19th-century two-light timber casements with glazing bars. The rear elevation features an approximately central door leading into the rear service room or passage, which has a late 20th-century timber and glazed porch. The left first-floor window is an 18th or 19th-century small-pane two-light timber casement, and there is a similar window on the ground floor left. The ground floor right has a three-light late 19th or 20th-century casement.

Inside, there is 18th and 19th-century joinery. The left-hand room has late 20th-century exposed joists and a rebuilt fireplace, while the right-hand room features a marbled chimneypiece from around the 1870s. The cottage is positioned gable end to the road and is part of a group with Nos 1 and 2 Ridgeway and Pitmans.
