Description

The Ridgeway, now divided into two dwellings, has origins in the late 16th century, although it was substantially remodelled and largely rebuilt around 1910 following a fire. The exterior is whitewashed cob and stone with a tiled roof, gabled at each end. There are stacks on the left end, axially, and at the rear laterally.

The original layout is obscured by the 1910 rebuilding, but it likely consisted of three rooms and a through passage, with the lower end to the right and a hall stack backing onto the passage. Some original features remain, including the hall and front doorway to the passage. The main datable features are from the 20th century. A 16th-century doorway leads into a stair hall. An inner room was likely located in the left-hand section (No 3), which was not inspected during the survey. The early 20th-century remodelling included raising the roof, and a late 20th-century wing was added at right angles to the main range.

The façade has an asymmetrical three-window arrangement. The doorway to No 2 features a fine, wide moulded oak frame with a rounded arch. A gabled 20th-century porch is situated to the left of No 3. Windows are 2 and 3-light 20th-century timber casements with glazing bars.

The interior of No 2, which was the only part inspected, features a high-quality granite fireplace in the left-hand room with hollow-chamfered pyramid-stopped jambs and a deep granite lintel, along with two chamfered crossbeams with step stops. The remainder of the interior consists of 20th-century features.

The building forms a group with No 1 and Pitman’s Cottage.
