Description

Briar Cottage is a small cottage, likely dating from the late 17th or early 18th century. The thatch roof was removed in 1959 and replaced with tiles. The exterior is whitewashed rendered cob and stone rubble with a gabled tiled roof. A projecting stack is on the right-hand end, and there's a rear left corner stack dating from the 20th century.

The cottage originally comprised a principal heated room to the right, a narrow service room to the left, and a small front outshut on the right-hand side. The front facade has an asymmetrical arrangement, with a two-light casement window to the left, a door to the right, and the roof slopes down over the outshut in a catslide fashion. A door and window are present on the inner return of the outshut. The left gable end of the main block has a doorway leading into the service room, flanked by small windows, and one window in the gable itself.

Inside, the heated room retains a chamfered crossbeam. The roof was not inspected, but may be of interest.

Briar Cottage is an unusual example of a very small early cottage and contributes to the group value of buildings in the centre of an exceptionally unspoiled village.
