Description

A large bank barn and attached horse engine house dating from the mid-19th century, situated approximately 20 metres west of Barton Town Farmhouse. The building is constructed of rubble stone with brick dressings around the openings, and has a slate roof with gable ends. The plan is rectangular, with the horse engine house attached at a right angle to the rear. The two-storeyed frontage is built into a bank, with rear access to the first floor. There are two winnowing doors on each side of a square opening, both with brick lintels. Above these are twelve pigeon holes; four are blocked and contain inserted horizontal pivot casements, while two have plank stable doors. The polygonal horse engine house to the rear features tapering pillars. External stone steps lead to a loft door on the right, and a cambered brick arch frames double plank doors to the left, supported by projecting rubble stone piers.
