Description
Almond Tree and River Peep are a pair of houses located on Albion Street in Shaldon, dating from the early 19th century. They are constructed of painted stucco and feature a continuous double-pitched slate roof with an eaves cornice. The houses have rendered stacks at the gable ends and a brick stack at the center ridge. Each house has a double-depth plan with rear additions.
The exterior consists of two storeys, with each house having a two-window range. The first-floor windows are positioned at eaves level and feature 6/6-pane sashes above 6-panel doors. The door of No.17, located on the left, is adorned with fluted pilasters that support an entablature. The doorcase of No.18, likely added in the later 19th century, includes reeded half columns and consoles beneath a cornice, with a glazed top and an overlight. To the left of each house, there is a full-height shallow curved bay with curved frames holding 8/8-pane sash windows.
Inside No.16, there is a panelled soffit and reeded pilasters that frame a semi-elliptical arch leading to an open string dogleg staircase. This staircase features stick balusters, a painted swan's neck handrail, and a turned newel.
