Description
25 and 25A Lower Street are two houses that have been converted into flats. They likely date from the mid-19th century but have earlier origins. The buildings feature plastered walls, a mix of stone rubble and timber-framing, and have a slate roof. The entrance front faces south towards Bayards Cove and has a three-room layout with the main entrance located left of center leading to the stairs. The right side has a two-room wing.
The exterior is three stories tall with an irregular front that has three windows, featuring horned four-pane sash windows. The doorway to the left of center has a part-glazed six-panel door behind a 20th-century glazed porch, while the doorway at the right end has a part-glazed door behind another glazed porch. The right return jetties at the first-floor level over the river and includes a two-window front with a 12-pane sash at ground level and horned four-pane sashes above. The roof is continuous with those of the neighboring properties and is hipped at the corner.
The interior has not been inspected but is expected to be of interest. This building is part of a notable group of listed buildings located on the Ferry Slip, at the southern end of Lower Street and the northern end of Bayards Cove, and is included for its group value.
