Description

21 and 22 Lower Street is a shop with a house above, dating from the mid to late 19th century, though it may have an earlier core. The building has a plastered front on stone rubble at ground-floor level, with timber-framing above. It features left rear lateral and right end stacks with plastered brick chimney shafts and pots, and a slate roof.

The structure has an altered double-depth plan that is two rooms wide and stands three storeys tall. The first floor has a two-window range. The plaster front is lightly blocked out to resemble ashlar. The ground floor includes a 19th-century timber shop front with two-pane windows on either side of a canted corner, which contains double bottom-panelled glazed doors and plain pilasters at each end, supporting a fascia under a moulded cornice. The single ground-floor windows on both sides have been adapted for shop display. The front doorway at the right end of the Lower Street front features a recessed four-panel door with an overlight that has glazing bars.

Above, there is a two-window front and a one-window side facing the Ferry Slip, all with flush-frame 12-pane sashes, some of which are not horned. The eaves are plain, and the roof is continuous with those of the adjoining properties, hipped at the corner. A partial inspection of the interior revealed plain 19th-century joinery and other features.
