Description

23 and 24 Lower Street is a shop with a house above, dating from the mid to late 19th century, though it may have an earlier core. The building features roughcast on stone rubble and timber-framing above the first-floor level on the front walls. It has a right rear lateral stack and left end stacks with plastered brick chimney shafts and pots, topped with a slate roof.

The building is designed as a double-depth house, two rooms wide, and stands three storeys tall. The ground floor along Lower Street has a late 19th-century timber shop front with two-light windows on either side of a recessed central doorway, which contains a bottom-panelled glazed door and a narrow overlight, along with a plain fascia. To the left, there is a house doorway with a recessed six-panel door and a narrow overlight. The upper part of the building has a one-window front towards the left end and a two-window front on the southern return, featuring horned four-pane sashes. The roof is continuous with those of the adjoining properties and is hipped at the corner.

The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest. This building is part of a notable group of listed buildings at the southern end of Lower Street, near the entrance to Bayards Cove, and is included for its group value.
