Description

Nos 1 and 2 Sunderland Terrace is a house that has been divided, with origins dating back to the 16th or 17th century, some improvements from the 18th century, and significant modernisation in the 20th century. The building features mixed construction, with stone rubble front and back walls, exposed at the rear and raised with slate-hung timber-framing towards Coles Court, while the front facing Ferry Slip is plastered. The bay and end wall towards Lower Street are also plastered timber-framed. It has stacks with plastered chimney shafts and pots, and a slate roof.

The building has a three-room plan, which seems to be largely a result of 20th-century reorganisation, although it may include earlier elements. An 18th-century bay projects forward from the left (west) end. Evidence suggests that the building originally extended further westward towards Lower Street, as indicated by the broken ends of the front and rear walls.

The exterior is three storeys high, with a plastered front featuring a 1:2-window arrangement. The left section, which is a projecting 18th-century bay, has pairs of sash windows on each floor: 16-pane sashes on the ground floor and taller 12-pane sashes on the upper floors, some of which have fat glazing bars and may date from the first half of the 18th century. There are moulded timber cornices at each floor level and a gable above. The doorway of No. 2 is immediately to the right, featuring a segmental arch and a recessed 20th-century two-flap "rustic" plank door. The right section has a wide picture window with glazing bars on the ground floor and 20th-century sashes without glazing bars above. The eaves are plain. The left gable-end wall contains a 20th-century door to No. 1 and a couple of 20th-century windows, while the rear includes a couple of 20th-century sashes with glazing bars in the slate-hung upper part.

Only No. 2 was inspected on the interior, which is largely the result of 20th-century modernisation, with no earlier features exposed.
