Description

Nos 11 and 12 The Plains is an early 19th century house located by the bridge approach, with two ranges of warehouses at the rear added in the mid-19th century on the site of the Town Quay. The building has three storeys and a three-window front facing The Plains, with an additional window return on the north side. It features a hipped Welsh slate roof with rendered stacks and a rendered front that includes a cornice and parapet. There is a plain band at the first floor level, and the first and second floors have recessed sash windows with glazing bars. On the north return (to No 12), there is a round-arched doorway with a fanlight that has Gothick arched lights and a half-glazed door. The gabled warehouse ranges are three and four storeys high, with the northern block having four windows. The warehouses have Welsh slate roofs and Devonian limestone rubble walls, with slate hung on the south side. The northern warehouse includes mullioned two-light casement windows with gauged brick arches, and gable fronts facing the river feature a loft door and cast iron cranes. There are later additions to the warehouses on the east side, which are now in multiple occupation.
