Description

There are two granite pillars, one of which is inscribed with the date 1687. Originally thought to be mid-18th century tollgate posts, they are now believed to be 17th century gates to the town marshes. Each pillar has a square cross section and is made of granite with iron fittings.

The northern pillar features the Civic Arms of Totnes, which includes a castle and a key motif on two of its faces, although the top of this stone seems to have been damaged. The southern pillar bears the date 1687. Both pillars show signs of wear on the carvings and have remnants of iron fittings.
