Description

This small detached cottage, located approximately 130 metres south-west of Harraton Farmhouse in Aveton Gifford, dates from the 18th century. It is constructed of rendered rubble or cob with brick stacks and features a thatched roof, with slate on the lean-to at the back. The cottage has a symmetrical front and a continuous lean-to across the rear, with the gable end facing the road.

It stands two storeys high and has two windows on the upper floor, which are 2-light glazing bar casements, while the ground floor features a 3-light glazing bar casement on the left. The central entrance is a plank door set in the light gable, with a blank recessed panel above it. The hipped end facing the lane has a larger 2-light casement low on the right and a smaller one at the top left. The back of the cottage includes a small single light window, a 20th-century glazed door, and a 2-light glazing bar casement. The far gable has a single light window at ground level and a small 2-light window set high. There are brick stacks at each gable and at each end of the outshut. The interior is not accessible. The cottage is situated on a lane that was formerly the Modbury to Kingsbridge road, which has since been bypassed by the A379, the later toll road.
