Description
56 Fore Street is a later 16th century or early 17th century merchant's house of the "deux corps de batiments" type. It retains its gallery, and the former back block is now No 1 Atherton Lane. The building was rebuilt in the early 19th century, extending over Atherton Lane at the first floor level. It has three storeys and two windows, featuring a Welsh slate roof with red brick stacks. The masonry party wall is corbelled at the first floor level for the former jetty. The front is plastered timber framed with a first floor jetty. The first and second floors have architraved sash windows with glazing bars. The ground floor has a modern shop window and doorway, while the former architraved house doorway has been converted for use as a window.
