Description

Brutus Stone is a worn granite monolith set in the pavement in front of Nos 51 and 53 on Fore Street. It is commemorated in local legend and serves as a gathering place for civic ceremonies. Before the street level was raised, it was an important topographical landmark of the Anglo-Saxon and Medieval town, possibly marking the meeting place of the Saxon witan or council of Totnes.
