Description
54 Fore Street is a Grade II* listed merchant's house dating from around 1607, representing a good example of the "deux corps de batiments" type. The building is 2½ storeys high and features two paired windows. It has a Welsh slate roof with a gabled front and masonry party walls made of Devonian limestone rubble. The ground floor at the west end has a granite corbel. The timber-framed front was renewed in the early 19th century but retains carved wooden bressumers and brackets from the jettied second floor and attics. The gable features carved half-timbering with the date 1607, and the front is plastered.
The second floor has architraved paired sash windows with glazing bars, while the first floor features a splayed oriel window with paired sashes and sidelights, also with glazing bars. There is a modern shop front with a bow window. Inside, original fireplaces are present in the ground floor rear room, which was formerly a parlour, and there is an early 18th-century staircase. At the back, there is a two-storey block with a hipped roof, a coved cornice, and a three-light window. The ground floor room, which was formerly a kitchen, also has an original fireplace and a newel staircase. The cellar includes a mullioned window.
