Description

No 18 on High Street is a merchant's house dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, designed in the "deux corps de batimnts" style. It was remodeled and refronted in the early 19th century. The building has three storeys and one window. The original separate kitchen block and gallery have been demolished; historical records indicate that the kitchen featured a frieze with carved wooden busts. The house has a hipped Welsh slate roof with a rendered stack. The front is plastered and timber-framed, with rusticated pilaster strips on the quoins that conceal the masonry party walls. The second floor jetties out at the west end, supported by a moulded granite corbel. The second floor features an architraved sash window with glazing bars, while the first floor has a segmental bowed sash window with three lights and glazing bars. The wooden shopfront includes pilasters that support an entablature, with a modern shop window and doorway. The house doorway is architraved and has a raised and fielded six-panel door, accessed by steps, and a rectangular fanlight with margin lights. The interior has been altered, featuring an early 19th-century staircase and chimneypieces. A rental from 1675 mentions Dr. Richard Burthogge, noting "for pillars before his house."
