Description
22 High Street is a building dating from the late 16th century, which was refronted in the earlier to mid-19th century. It stands three storeys high and features one window. The roof is hipped and covered with Welsh slate, topped by a rendered stack. The front is plastered and timber-framed, with rusticated pilaster strips on the corners that conceal the masonry party walls. A dentil cornice runs along the top, and the second floor juts out, supported by a moulded bressumer and wooden brackets. The second floor has paired sash windows with architraves, while the first floor features splayed-bay oriel windows. The ground floor has a modern shopfront. At the rear, there is a two-storey range that includes early 18th-century and later sash and casement windows with glazing bars, as well as an early 19th-century former shop window with small panes and a boarded door. Inside, there is an open-well staircase from the earlier to mid-18th century, featuring a closed string, turned and barley-sugar balusters, square newels, and a moulded handrail. The first-floor rear room, which was originally a hall, was later ceiled and has a decorated plaster ceiling with ribwork. The building is listed as Grade II* due to its significant interior.
