Description
46 High Street is a Grade II* listed house built in 1806, with parts dating back to the 16th century or earlier, and altered around 1825. The building is constructed from limestone ashlar and topped with a Welsh slate roof. The main facade features a symmetrical design with two storeys and three bays, including a storey band, modillion cornice, and a blocking course. The central bay projects slightly and has an open pediment with a blind oculus. The windows are sashed with glazing bars, while the ground floor showcases tripartite timber bows resting on stone bases. The first floor has tripartite outer windows with flat-faced stone mullions. A six-panel door is set within a stone doorcase that includes engaged Tuscan columns and a pediment. The gables are coped and feature chimneys.
To the left, there is a lower bay that also has a storey band and a cornice with a blocking course. Its windows are tripartite with flat-faced mullions, and there is a door on the left side. At the rear of the lower bay, a wing contains three small quatrefoiled openings in its west wall.
Inside, there is an open-well stair with an open string, stick balusters, and a ramped handrail. The rear wing features three cruck trusses, one of which has had its tie-beam removed, along with spurs and outriders. The southern truss shows empty mortices for arch-braces that are visible on the first floor, indicating that the building may have originally extended further south.
