Description

Hunter's Lodge is a restaurant that was formerly a house, dating from the 17th century, with possible earlier elements and late 19th-century additions and alterations. The building is constructed of squared limestone, with remnants of timber framing and a stone slate roof, featuring an irregular plan and two storeys.

The south front has a parapet and two projecting gabled bays, which include 19th-century rebated and chamfered cross windows. The right-hand section of the front wall between the bays is stepped back and features a single-storey porch with a hipped roof. There are chimneys located against the inside of the right-hand wall and to the left of the left-hand gabled bay.

At the rear, there is a parallel range that appears to be mainly from the 19th century. On the east side, there is a 19th-century stone doorway recessed between the gables of the two ranges. The rear wall of the front range, adjacent to this doorway, is made of exposed close-studded timber framing. Peg holes in the principal post indicate that this timber wall may have originally extended further to the east. The parallel front wall of the rear range, next to the other side of the doorway, is also close-studded but made of re-used timber and is not consistently pegged, suggesting it may be from the 19th century.

Inside, the right-hand (east) room of the front range features a spine beam and common joists that are chamfered and stopped. The wide stone fireplace is cyma-moulded and has a cornice mantel.
