Description

This is a summerhouse located approximately 20 metres south-east of Hillsborough Cottage in Ilfracombe, dating from the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of coursed stone rubble with dressed stone details and features a flat roof. The building is small and octagonal, with an external staircase on the south-east side.

The exterior, which was inspected only from the public roads on the east and south, shows an opening with a Tudor arch and hood-mould on each face of the upper storey. Some of these openings are blind or blocked, including one on the ground storey, but at least three have glazed, two-light windows with wooden mullions and transoms. There is a raised band between the storeys, a moulded top cornice, and a parapet. The east side has a doorway in the upper storey, with a door framed by ribbed, square stone piers and iron railings in between, designed with the feet of the uprights resembling lilies. The interior was not inspected. Notably, the summerhouse is not depicted on the tithe map of 1840.
