Description
Lower Metcombe Farmhouse is a farmhouse that has been converted into two dwellings. It likely has origins dating back to the 16th century but was remodeled in the late 18th century, with later alterations to the rear. The building is constructed from whitewashed shale and cob and features a gable-ended slate roof. The earlier structure consists of a single pile, two-storey house with two right-angled extensions at the rear, creating an irregular three-sided courtyard plan.
The south facade includes a small sash window on the left gable end and a large stone chimney stack on the right. There is a three-window range of timber sashes with glazing bars, each having six panes, flanking a central six-paned casement window above a doorway. To the right of the doorway is a two-light timber casement window, with six panes in each light, while to the left is a blocked window opening and an inserted 20th-century metal casement. On the east side, there is a large chimney stack with a tripartite sash window to the left and a timber sash window to the right, both with eight panes, along with a casement window above. A brief inspection of the interior indicated an interesting roof structure featuring curved principals, possibly crucks.
