SS 53 NW MARWOOD

4/18 Lower Metcombe Farmhouse -

  • II Farmhouse, now 2 dwellings. Probably C16 origins, remodelled late C18 to later exterior to rear. Whitewashed shale and cob with gable-ended slate roof. Earlier fabric of single pile 2-storey house with 2 right-angled extensions to rear forming irregular 3-sided courtyard plan. South facade has small sash to left gable end and large stone stack to right. 3 window range of timber sashes with glazing bars 6 panes per sash to each side of 6-paned casement above doorway with 2-light timber casement, 6 panes each, to right and a blocked window opening and inserted C20 metal casement to left. On the east side is a large stack with tripartite sash window to left and timber sash to right, 8 panes per sash, with casement above. Brief interior inspection suggested interesting roof structure with curved principals possibly crucks.
